SHUMATE, JR., Strother – 85

Retired Major Strother "Junior" Shumate, Jr., 85 of Lafayette, passed away at 10:35 a.m. Monday, April 16, 2012 at IU Health Arnett Hospital. Born September 13, 1926 in Romney, IN, he was the son of the late Strother Shumate, Sr. and Golda Mills Shumate. He was a 1945 graduate of Romney High School and received his Bachelor of Science degree in 1948 from the former Canterbury College in Danville, IN. He taught high school history in Cass County, he then went to work at Alcoa Aluminum for a while. He was commissioned into the U.S. Air Force in 1953 for Officers Candidate School and served in Viet Nam. He retired as a Major in 1972 after serving 20 years.
Junior was a champion skeet shooter while in the Air Force. He was one of the top shooters in the world and qualified as an alternate for the U.S. Olympics Team during the 1960's.

On January 8, 1977 he married Marietta Newton Floyd at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Lafayette and she survives. Junior was a member of the American Legion Post #492 in West Lafayette. He participated in the Senior Olympics medalling in table tennis, discus throw, pool, and darts. He enjoyed being a bee keeper for many years.

Surviving with his wife are four children, Robin "Rob" Shumate (wife, Deborah) of Houston, TX, Joni Taylor (husband, Lyndall) of Time, IL, Lisa A. Hernandez (husband, Ariel) of Lafayette, and Steve J. Floyd also of Lafayette. Also surviving are grandchildren: Stephanie Alvarado (husband, Joseph), Meagan Shumate, Lynn Taylor, John Taylor, Troy Taylor, Justin Floyd, Eric Floyd, Michelle Floyd, Marisa Hernandez, Andre Hernandez; Casey Smith and Rodney Riddle (wife Rhonda), and great grandchildren, Xavier Alvarado, Reed Riddle, Randi Riddle and Zoey Alvarado. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Violet Shumate and Marie Bray.

Visitation from 5-8 p.m. Friday at Hippensteel Funeral Home with Rosary service at 4:45 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial Saturday at 11 a.m. at St. Boniface Catholic Church with Father Jeff Martin officiating. Military honors following the mass on the steps of St. Boniface Catholic Church. Burial of ashes at a later date at Elmwood Cemetery in Romney, IN.
