Sarah R. Duncan
Miss Sarah R. Duncan, 95, of West Lafayette, passed away at 12:17 p.m. Saturday, April 28, 2012 in the emergency room at IU Arnett Hospital. Sarah was born November 7, 1916 in Williamston, SC, the daughter of the late Thomas and Ida Hawkins Duncan. She was raised in the Williamston area and graduated from Williamston High School. Sarah had lived in Chicago for 70 years, working in switchboard assembly at the AT&T plant for over 38 years before retiring. She moved to the Greater Lafayette area in November of 2005 and became a member of Second Baptist Church. She is also a member of the AT&T Retirees Club, AARP, Church Women United, and both the National NAACP and the West Lafayette-Lafayette NAACP Branch #3056 where she was the oldest member. Sarah enjoyed knitting sweaters and hats but more than that, she enjoyed traveling, visiting Norway, Spain, Greece, and other parts of Europe.
Sarah is survived by her brother: Joseph H. Duncan and his wife Antoinette of Gary, IN, several nieces and nephews, great-nieces and nephews, and great-great-nieces and nephews. Sarah is also survived by her dear friend and care-giver, Sadie Harper-Scott of West Lafayette. Visitation one hour prior to the service 2 p.m. Thursday, Second Baptist Church, 2925 S. 18th Street, with Associate Pastor Charles Giles officiating and Interim Pastor Ezell Wiggins presiding. Burial to follow at Spring Vale Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the West Lafayette-Lafayette NAACP Branch 3056, P.O. Box 6145, Lafayette, IN 47904.
