Roy August Boedeker, 89 of Indianapolis, died on May 08, 2012. Roy was born on August 23, 1922 in Roseland Community Hospital (Chicago) to Fritz A. and Edna Carey Boedeker. He was raised in Roseland and graduated from Fenger High School in 1940. He then graduated from Illinois Institute of Technology in 1944 with a degree in Chemical Engineering after which he enlisted into the U.S. Navy. He trained at Great Lakes, IL, Stillwater, OK and the Navy Pier in Chicago, and then he served on the USS Montour (APA-101) a transport ship delivering equipment and troops to Japan. He was an electronics technician's mate 3/C SV-V6.
Roy spent many years as a Cub Scout Master sponsored by the Bethel E + R Church in Roseland. There he met his lovely wife Gloria Ellen Muller and they were married on May 26, 1951.
While working for National Lead Company in Chicago, a job transfer moved them to Philadelphia, PA where the family settled in Southampton, PA (Bucks County). His career involved him in paint and industrial finishes and varnishes formulating. He and Gloria moved to Indianapolis in 2000.
The Warminster United Church of Christ was a large part of Roy's life. He served as Property Chairman, Sunday School Teacher, Choir member and various roles in Christmas pageants and organizing annual Flea Markets. After moving to Indianapolis Roy continued his faith journey at the First Congregational United Church of Christ.
Wood carving was a favorite hobby and Roy and he was a member of the Delaware Valley Woodcarvers Society. Roy was delighted in carving figures and puppets and wooden toys.
Roy was a member of the Frankford Masonic Lodge, The York Rite, the LULU Shrine, the Murat Shrine in PA and in Indianapolis and the Valley of Indianapolis Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite N.M.J. Roy held a lifetime membership in the VFW and the American Legion.
Roy was preceded in death by his parents, a brother Frederick A. Boedeker and a sister Edna C. Brazaitis. He leaves behind to cherish his memories his loving wife Gloria Ellen (Muller) Boedeker, his beloved children Susan B. Hughes (John), Russell R. Boedeker (Susan D.), Douglas A. Boedeker (Heather), and his loving grandchildren Gareth C. Hughes (Amy), Rebecca C. Hughes, David R. Boedeker (Tawni), Rory C. Boedeker, and Ryan A. Boedeker and his great grandchildren Jayden Roy Boedeker and Bryson David Boedeker and Belle Halladay Hughes and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services for Roy will be held on Friday May 11, 2012 at First Congregational United Church of Christ 7171 North Pennsylvania Street Indianapolis, IN 46240 at 11:00 AM with calling beginning at 9:45 AM until service time. Broad Ripple Masonic Lodge #643 will perform a Masonic Service at 9:45 AM. Burial will follow in Beverly Cemetery in Blue Island, IL at 3 PM C.S.T. In lieu of flowers the Boedeker family is requesting memorial contributions be given to First Congregational United Church of Christ 7171 North Pennsylvania Street Indianapolis, IN. 46240 or the Shriner's Hospital for Children 2211 North Oak Park Ave. Chicago, IL. 60707 or Illinois Institute of Technology 3300 South Federal Street Suite 503 Chicago, IL 60616.
