KOCHERT, Sr., John E. – 83

John E. Kochert, Sr., 83 of West Lafayette, passed away at his home at 5:12 p.m. on Monday, April 30, 2012. Born March 21, 1929 in Lafayette, he was the son of the late John and Lettie Ilgenfritz Kochert. John was a graduate of Buck Creek High School.

He married Helen A. McKay on November 8, 1951 in Lafayette and she survives. He was the Assistant Fire Chief at Purdue University and a Purdue University Police officer. He retired in 1980 after serving a total of 22 years. He was a member of Church of the Blessed Sacrament in West Lafayette. He was also a member of the Oxford Sheep Association and he enjoyed farming, antique farm shows, and spending time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Surviving with his wife are their three daughters: Carol Sue Hunt (husband, Mark) of Spring Creek, NV, Debra Higgs (husband, Stephen) of West Lafayette, and Ann Tobar (husband, Rod) of Logansport. Also surviving are seven grandchildren: Tammy Synesael, Brian Kennedy, Ryan and Eric Higgs, Shanna Lank, Jessica Tobar, and Mackenzie Tobar, and four great grandchildren: Bradlee and Abby Synesael and Byron and Devon Kennedy.
He was preceded in death by a son, John E. Kochert, Jr., two brothers, Harold and Lee Kochert, and two sisters, Wilma Daugherty and Merlin Miller.

Visitation from 5-8 p.m. Sunday at Hippensteel Funeral Home with Rosary at 5 p.m. and Fireman's Last Call at 7:45 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial Monday at 11 a.m. at the Church of the Blessed Sacrament with Father David Buckles officiating. Burial to follow at St. Boniface Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Marshall County Community Foundation in memory of Jack Kochert Memorial Scholarship Fund.
