Hayden E. "Shorty" or "Speedy the Clown" Woods

To the family of Hayden, our thoughts and prayers are with you all as you celebrate a life well lived. We cherish our memories of the days in the early 1970s when Phyllis provided before and after school care for our two sons. Hayden was always there working in his woodshop. Our deepest sympathy!

What a wonderful man our Speedy was,all who came in contact with him were blessed. Once we were assymbling race cars with the special needs "kids" and some 6' guy decieded to hammer the window, needless to say the next year he brought pre-assymbled cars and we just painted and raced them. Even when his hands hurt so much he couldn't tie the balloons he was there anyway, he would bring
one of his wonderful family or a friend, and the blessings would be spred a little further.
There is a Speedy size hole in my heart, God Bless, Kazoo

We knew Shorty at Western Electric as a good natured and friendly co-worker. He will be known as one who helped others. We send our heartfelt condolences to Shorty's surviving family members.

Once when I called, Uncle Hayden told me that he received the Clown of the Year award. I said jokingly I don't know if that's something I would be bragging about. Then I said, can you imagine telling your friends 20 years ago that you were the clown of the year what their reaction would be? We both had a good laugh. He went on to tell me with a proud humble voice, all the amazing things that he had

Once when I called, Uncle Hayden told me that he received the Clown of the Year award. I said jokingly I don't know if that's something I would be bragging about. Then I said, can you imagine telling your friends 20 years ago that you were the clown of the year what their reaction would be? We both had a good laugh. He went on to tell me with a proud humble voice, all the amazing things that he had done and yet he seemed shocked that he had won the award. He explained how he cut out all of these highly detailed guardian angels (over 10000 the last count I heard about) and how he would cut out hundreds of toy race car parts from any kind of wood he could get his hands on i.e. pine, persimmon, apple, cherry, oak or mahogany from pallets, fence post or throw away scraps, among the items I can remember. He (Uncle Hayden A.K.A Speedy the Clown) then would bring huge bags and boxes full of race car parts that he had cut out either from his well equipped woodshop or later on, from the comfort of his favorite arm chair stationed in his living room, so that kids from all the hospitals he would volunteer at, could design, assemble and decorate, under his very patient and loving guidance, their very own race cars. I could hear the joy in his voice as he explained how the kids with huge smiles on their very sick faces, raced their new cars down the race track that he just so happened to make and bring along with him as well. He continued to do this for many years. I know God just got himself one wonderful/great/amazing/incredible/outstanding human being and also someone to run his woodshop. Uncle Hayden I love you with all my heart and I appreciate all the love and support you have given me throughout my life. Please give, Grandma, Grandpa, Dad and Aunt Phyllis a hug and a kiss for me and tell them I said hi. I miss you Egads

Dearsest Family, What a great man! Humble, always available to listen & would help anyone at any time. I'm very proud to be his nephew and I hope to carry on his wonderful legacy. I will never be able to express my gratitude for all the things he has helped me with but I hope to pass on the same love and service that showed me and many many others. We are so sorry, we wish we could be there for you tomorrow. You will be in our thoughts and prayers. We know that Hayden and Phyllis are looking at us all now saying we are happy we are back together. But that doesnt make it any easier we know. They were both angels given to us from God. Hayden was a wonderful kind and caring man, he deserves Heaven and happiness :)
