William "Bill" Mellencamp, 75, passed away Saturday afternoon, February 4, 2012. He was a longtime Greenwood resident.
He was born January 29, 1937 in Cortland, IN to Edwin and Irene (Rucker) Mellencamp. He married his wife, Sharlene, on July 23, 1960. Survivors two sons, Mark W. (Michelle) Mellencamp of Greenwood and Philip L. (Michal) Mellencamp of Whitestown; one daughter, Paula (Larry) Hauch of Greenwood; one brother, Charles E. (Betty) Mellencamp of Greenwood; and twelve grandchildren, Kayli Mellencamp, Madison Mellencamp, Connor Mellencamp, Alaric Gough, Shelby Overstreet, Kagan Mellencamp, Alex Campbell, Cassy Mellencamp, A.J. Valle, Ari Valle, Pam Ditchley and Melanie Hauch.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Sharlene Chowning Mellencamp, on January 6, 2012.
Bill graduated from Cortland High School in Jackson County. He later earned his Bachelors degree in Education at Franklin College, and his Masters degree in Education from Purdue University.
Bill touched many lives in the community as a teacher for many years. He retired from Greenwood Community Schools, where he taught math at the high school for many years. He was a long time chairman of the math department. He later assisted many area schools, including Greenwood Christian Academy and Center Grove Schools.
He was a member of the Community Church of Greenwood, where he was an active choir member and a Potpourri Players member. Sharlene and Bill traveled on many missions trips with the church. He was a former member of Concordia Lutheran Church. Over the years, he supported OMS, African Leadership, World Vision, and World Gospel Missions. He also was a a volunteer at The Refuge and Wheeler Mission.
Bill was an active member of the Kiwanis Club of Greenwood, of which he was a long time active member and Past President. He spent many efforts over the years assisting in the planning of its Travelogue series.
Calling hours will be from 4-8 PM, Friday, February 17, at the Community Church of Greenwood, 1477 W. Main Street. Rev. Steve Czajkowski will officiate a Celebration of Life service at 10 AM Saturday, February 18 at the church.
